THE PUBLIC REGISTER OF ALL ARMORIAL BEARINGS IN SCOTLAND 1672-2022
The series of events marking the 350th Anniversary of the Lyon Register continues in the second half of the year as laid our below. The first six events can be found here. The remaining events are as follows: Lecture 7: Shetland Museum and Archives, Lerwick, Monday 8th August Date: Monday, 8 August Venue: Shetland Museum and Archives, Hays Dock, Lerwick ZE1 0WP Time: 6:30 pm Registration, talk 7 pm Stories from the Lyon Register Speaker: Rothesay Herald, Liam Devlin Created by Act of the Scottish Parliament in 1672, the Public Register of All Armorial Bearings in Scotland contains every coat of arms in legal use in Scotland for 350 years. Behind every coat of arms is a story, whether of a community, a local authority or an individual, from Nicolson of Lochend to Donald Trump, from Neven of Shousburgh/Skousburgh to Sir Sean Connery. This short talk will look at some of these heraldic stories which form part of our unique Scottish heritage with particular reference to Shetland. Eventbrite Link to follow. Lecture 8: Trades Hall, Glasgow, Wednesday 31st August 2022 Date: Wednesday, 31 August 2022 Venue: Trades House of Glasgow, Trades Hall, 85 Glassford Street, Glasgow, G1 1UH Time: 5:30 pm Registration, 6 pm Lecture Commences, 7 pm Drinks Reception Arms and the Mind: Heraldry & Healing in the First World War Synopsis Speaker: Professor Beverly Bergman OBE Told through the stories of Lady Clementine Waring, who was awarded a CBE for her war work, and some of the officer patients themselves, this talk will explore how a unique collection of heraldic shields found at a former convalescent home for wounded officers in the Scottish Borders revealed a novel treatment for mental health trauma in the First World War. Follow-up after the War shows that many recovered well from their experiences and went on to lead successful lives. The talk will be illustrated with personal photographs and recollections, as well as the shields themselves, and some surprising discoveries! They may be easy to see as primarily graphical images but, whilst this gives them their potency to communicate, the power of the message being conveyed comes from its symbolism. That potent symbolism in flags may be intentionally incorporated into the design or become associated with it subsequently over time. The stories captured in this symbolism will be explored from the well-known legend of the Saltire, recorded at the start of the Lyon Court’s register 350 years ago, right through to development of modern community flags.
